O Holy Night

Christmas 2016

Merry Christmas Everyone,

It was almost 60 years ago that I first heard the beloved Christmas Carol, O Holy Night. I can remember it like it was yesterday. In Elementary School I played the trombone and my best friend, Gordon West, played the baritone. We were preparing for the annual Christmas band concert and Gordon was given a solo number to play. When I asked him what it was he said it was O Holy Night. I said you must mean Silent Night Holy Night, but no, it was O Holy Night. He played it for me, it was the first time I had ever heard it. I asked him if I could copy the music so I could play it on the trombone. There were no lyrics just the music, but I loved it.

Years later in high school when I began to play the guitar the first Christmas song I learned was O Holy Night. It was also the first time I had ever sung it. Twenty years ago when I recorded my Christmas Album, That’s Why I Call You Savior, O Holy Night was included with a nice arrangement by my friend, Jeff Nelson.

This year I decided it was time for a new arrangement so I asked Jeff if he would do one for me, very traditional, with classic piano and orchestra. The arrangement is simple, and beautiful, exactly what I was looking for. This has been a remarkable year of ministry this Christmas Season. Along with my praise team we have performed 9 concerts in Michigan prisons and for a group of Veterans who meet together each Monday evening for Bible Study. In addition I have sung in 9 nursing homes and for a chapel service at SEND International, the mission agency I served with shortly after we moved to Michigan.

Tomorrow the team and I are going over to Chicago to present a Christmas concert for a ministry called RTO, Radical Time Out, a Bible study for ex-offenders and their families as well as families of those currently serving time. The leader of the ministry is Manny Mill, himself an ex-offender! I encourage you to check out his website,  www.MannyMill.com.

Of course, at each of the concerts I have sung O Holy Night. What a blessing!!! I never tire of the song and would like to share the new arrangement with you as a way to say Merry Christmas. I want to thank you for your friendship, encouragement, prayers and support over the years. You have been a blessing to me and I trust this small gift will bless you and remind you of what happened on that Holy Night some two thousands year ago. That night is a night set apart in history, truly a holy night, when God sent His Son into the world to save His people from their sins. Think about it, God became man and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten of the Father full of grace and truth.

He came to seek and to save the lost. To do that He had to die a sinner’s death so that through Him the Father could draw a people to himself by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. I pray you personally experience the hope and salvation that comes through Jesus this Christmas Season.

Merry Christmas!!!
